The New York City Marathon is one of the largest, most well known and most prestigious marathon races in the world. It was established in 1970 where 127 runners participated. By 2010 the number of participants had climbed to 45.000! It attracts both amateurs and elite runners from all over the world. It is one of the most popular marathons in the world. The route takes the participants through the five boroughs of the city.

Athanasia Tsoumeleka is our Athens 2004 Gold Olympic Medalist, who participates at the NYC Marathon for the very first time for charity.

“Athanasia” in Greek means “Immortality” !!! This is the meaning and also the message she sends to us. She calls us to look inside us and search for the Eternal Principles our ancestors taught us – our Heritage. This Heritage, we must keep alive and use as a compass to our mission in life.

Her participation at the NYC Marathon 2015 signals and proves the consistency and continuity of the real Athletic Spirit which goes beyond stadiums and reaches every one of us.

Athanasia is “Greece” for the Greek diaspora. She invites us to remember that the Eternal Olympic Spirit lives within every Greek heart and to remember that the “Athletic Spirit” is a Great Notion – It is an Ideal – it is Life itself.

She runs NYC Marathon for Make A Wish Greece. Together with Mary Liarou-Barbaris, a 50-year old executive who run her very first race – a 5K ladies race – two years ago.
They both want to send a message that:
“Nothing is Impossible” when there is Faith in us.” – “When there is faith in Life, Faith in Hope, faith in Struggle, Faith for the Better”. “Have faith” and “Make A Wish” and Everything is Possible.
We – Greeks – are still alive and we move forward – and in order to move forward we must first look back – where we come from – where our roots are and who were our ancestors. This is our History!
“We believe in the healing power of a wish come true.”
