The Association of Greek American Professional Women (AGAPW) under the auspices of the Greek General Consulate and Ambassador Ms. Aghi Balta invites you to its inaugural annual celebration of “Mothers of Greek Descent.”

Please join us on Thursday, May 5th, 6:00-8:00 p.m at the New York Greek Consulate, 69 East 79th Street, New York, NY, for our opening reception of a photographic show and presentation by Dr. Marina Mkhitaryan on “Greeks of Armenia” dedicated to the memory of her Pontic mother (to download the flyer of the event in pdf format click here).

The exhibit will be open to the public between May 2nd – May 16th.

Curator of the exhibit: Photographer Eleftherios Kostans.

Special appearance on Pontian Lyra by Demetris Stephanides of Pontian Society Komninoi.

Traditional mezedes prepared by the Women of the Pontian Society Pontos of Norwalk.

The exhibit will be open to the public May 2nd – May 16th.

Each year AGAPW will celebrate mothers of Greek descent by featuring the body of work of artists or other professionals inspired by and dedicated to Greek mothers and mothers of the Greek Diaspora. Our inaugural celebration in May 2011 will feature the ethnographic photographic work of Greek Armenian Dr. Marina Mkhitaryan.

Marina Mkhitaryan, born and raised in Yerevan Armenia to an Armenian father and a Pontic Greek mother has done extensive photographic research on the Greek community in Armenia. Her collection of archival family photos together with her own original photographs of Greek Armenians in their homes, communities and classrooms, where the Greek language is being taught, records the community’s rich history and accomplishments, their contributions to their homeland and continuous efforts to preserve the Greek language and culture and connect to the motherland. Marina has dedicated her work to the memory of her mother Nina Lazareva (Lazaridou) and to all Greek mothers. Please visit: www.greeksofarmenia.com.
