Past Event – December 8th, 2011

The Association of Greek American Professional Women (AGAPW) cordially invites you to attend an:

“Artist Talk”
reception with Greek artist and art educator
Natasha Metaxa

Ms. Metaxa will discuss her work in the context of the current art scene in Greece. Though the financial crisis is taking a toll on the Greek society, Greek artists continue to produce great works.

Natasha Metaxa, features her 1st ‘Angels’ exhibition in New York during the 2011 holiday season. She is a Greek artist raised in Athens, origins from Cephalonia, where she was influenced by the luminance and the purity of the island’s light. Over the last 20 years she has been focusing on contemporary figurative/representational painting. Ms. Metaxa trained in the Athens School of Fine Arts, Florence and New York. Although she started as a colorist, her true interests became the integration between painting and mathematics and the hidden geometry of art. She says that “it is the combination of knowledge and the environment that influences an artist. The Greek landscape with its absolute beauty and the daily contact as an Athenian with the Parthenon leads [her] to explore the world of visual harmonies.” (http://metaxanatasha.com/)

Her ‘Angels’ exhibit at the A. Jain Marunouchi Gallery is inspired by the angelic side of human nature. It portrays ordinary men and women of various ages and ethnic backgrounds, all possessing wings, as angels. Her intention is to make evident that the superior characteristics which are attributed to Angels could be elements of our own human behaviour. High technology prints on transparent polycarbonate materials are resting smoothly next to huge black and white charcoal drawings that float provocatively in a white vacant space. This dipole develops a conversation between existence and illusion and extends on an equivalent dialogue between contemporary and classical expressive means. In her own words:

“Through my work, I would like to share my feelings and beliefs with the Greek and other communities of New York and to remind that Greece exports culture and art. Greece is not the equivalent of the debt crisis. I feel that this is my responsibility as a Greek artist of today.”

We are pleased to have Ms. Metaxa with us in New York, and hope you will be able join her this Thursday.
